| I saw all of the sad news. Unforseen occurrences can befall anyone at anytime. We have to be grateful for each day of life that we are allowed and also the blessings that we receive daily. | |

| Subject: Gary Coleman, Dennis Hopper Dead Sat May 29, 2010 6:10 pm | |
| With all the celebrity deaths of late you are probably no longer surprised to hear these things. Gary Coleman died of a hemorrage in his brain at 42 years old. Dennis Hopper died of prostrate cancer at 74. Not very long ago Brittany Murphy died. For those who don't know, her husband was very recently found dead as well. Getting caught up watching them perform is easy and we forget at times that they are real people, with real families, problems, and issues that we have. Remember to pray for their families, for their comfort and peace. | |

| It's weird that 2 days after I posted this that I started seeing reports about food prices having jumped the highest in 26 years.
Then I read that Australia faces a huge locust plague.
I'm going to bump this up from time to time because I want to be sure it is seen by everyone.
I'm not trying to run away yelling, "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" But I do think that knowledge is better known. | |

| Food Shortages On The Horizon
http://agriculture.imva.info/
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When a large segment of the population is facing a drastic cut in income in the face of escalating food prices we have a catastrophic problem in the making. Today we have the simultaneous events of income deflation and food inflation; two high-speed express trains coming down that tracks at each other, a financial crisis colliding with staggering crop losses, which are cutting deeply into available planetary food reserves. Prices of food are again beginning to soar again just as millions are losing the ability to afford a reasonable diet, though little of this is being observed or reported. But soon even the blind will see.
From corn to crude, prices for a wide range of commodities are on the rise across the globe. In recent months, global food prices have been growing at a rate that rivals some of the wildest monthsof 2008, when food riots erupted across the developing world. - January 9th Wall Street Journal
The cold is again freezing oranges in Florida. Temperatures in Miami dropped to 36F; beating the record 37F set in 1938. Officials are saying that hundreds of millions of dollars of food perished. Vegetables were among the hardest hit. At least one major tomato grower, Ag-Mart Produce, has already declared that most of its Florida crop is “useless due to the freeze.” Other vegetable farms were expected to lose their entire crop, and wholesale prices have already increased. “Tomatoes were down around $14 for a 25-pound box; now they are up over $20,” said Gene McAvoy, an agriculture expert with the University Florida, who predicted $100 million in vegetable losses. “Peppers — just after New Year’s they were $8 a box; now they’re up around $18.”
White sugar climbed to the highest price in at least two decades in London on speculation that India, Pakistan and other importers will purchase more of the sweetener as a supply deficit looms. Excess rains in Brazil and a weak monsoon in India hurt sugar-cane output from the world’s two biggest growers. - January 20, 2010
The world faces “mass starvation” following North America’s next major crop failure. And it could even happen before year’s end.Read more in spoiler... - Spoiler:
So says Chicago-based Don Coxe, who is one of the world’s leading experts on agricultural commodities, so much so that Canada’s renowned BMO Financial Group named the fund after him. A crop failure in North America will have particularly dire consequences for major overseas markets that are highly reliant on U.S. crop imports.
Scientists in England are warning that a “perfect storm” of food shortages and water scarcity now threatens to unleash public unrest and conflict, the government’s chief scientist, Professor John Beddington, has warned. “People do not quite realise the scale of the issue,” said Professor Mike Bevan. “This is one of the most serious problems that science has ever faced.” In Britain the lives of hundreds of thousands of people will be threatened by food shortages. The repercussions of food shortages for any society are devastating. The world faces “mass starvation” following more major crop failures in the United States and other places around the globe.
We are facing a problem that literally has never been faced in human history. Surging population and food demand, food inflation, diminishing world food stocks, drought, flooding, cold, diminished credit, infestations, soil erosion, industrial farming, factory farm pollution, aquifers/wells going dry, relocation of produce for energy production are all slamming into a global financial and economic crisis. And in some places like the United States they don’t have enough farmers. Then on top of everything else we have desertification, which is one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. New deserts are growing at a rate of 20,000 square miles (51,800 square kilometers) a year. Desertification leads to famine, mass starvation and human migration.
According to Eric de Carbonnel, “There is overwhelming, undeniable evidence that the world will run out of food next year. The 2010 Food Crisis is going to be different. It is the crisis that will make all doomsday scenarios come true. Early in 2009, the supply and demand in agricultural markets went badly out of balance. The world experienced a catastrophic fall in food production as a result of the financial crisis (low commodity prices and lack of credit) and adverse weather on a global scale. Normally food prices should have already shot higher months ago, leading to lower food consumption and bringing the global food supply/demand situation back into balance. This never happened because the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), instead of adjusting production estimates down to reflect decreased production, adjusted estimates upwards to match increasing demand from china. In this way, the USDA has brought supply and demand back into balance (on paper) and temporarily delayed a rise in food prices by ensuring a catastrophe in 2010.”
According to the United States Department of Agriculture U.S. farmers produced the largest corn and soybean crops on record in 2009. And there are people who believe that anyone who believes government figures on anything concerning the economy or anything else is out to lunch.
Very few people in the US have given any serious consideration to the question of food security. This essay should convince people that its time to start. For the most part, we’re not aware of the problem but if we look hard at the ‘hidden’ news we see that the handwriting is on the wall for an unimaginable crisis that will come on us as early as this year.
More than 2.1 million hectares of grain have been destroyed by drought in 2009 in Russia, Agriculture Minister Yelena Skrynnik said. A total of 616,000 hectares have been destroyed in the region, or 70% of the total amount planted.
“The world is blissfully unaware that the greatest economic, financial and political crisis ever is a few months away. It takes only the tiniest bit of research to realize something is going critically wrong in the agricultural market. All someone needs to do to know the world is headed for food crisis is to stop reading USDA’s crop reports predicting a record soybean and corn harvests and listen to what else the USDA is saying.
Specifically, the USDA has declared half the counties in the Midwest to be primary disaster areas, including 274 counties in the last 30 days alone. These designations are based on the criteria of a minimum of 30 percent loss in the value of at least one crop in the county,” continues de Carbonnel.

| It is now known that actor Andrew Koenig, best known for his role of Boner in Growing Pains, has committed suicide. His parents, Judy Levitz and Walter Koenig, held a news conference in the park in Vancouver where his body was found. Several of Andrew's good friends decided to organize a search in a park where Andrew liked to take walks. They found him dead. It is very sad news, as he was a wonderful actor and I'm sure it pains his parents greatly. He had been missing over 11 days and had failed to board a flight from Vancouver to Los Angeles. His father is best known for his role of Pavel Chekov from Star Trek fame. My heart goes out to this family. I can't imagine the pain and sadness they are feeling knowing this wonderful actor and all the potential he shared with the world and could have continued to share. | |

| It's good to see that in today's day and age, that young people want to make a difference. Princess Diana would be proud of her son! To see that he is willing to step out of his comfort zone to touch people where they are and show the concern for the ordinary person, and especially those in need. The ones that the world often overlookds. I was glad to read this story. It's good that Princess Diana exposed her children to the world and all of its different elements so that they now are not afraid to step out and help others! | |

Haiti gov't says 150K bodies recovered in capital By MICHELLE FAUL and PAUL HAVEN, AP
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The confirmed death toll from Haiti's devastating earthquake has topped 150,000 in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area alone, the communications minister said Sunday, with many more thousands dead around the country or still buried under the rubble.
Communications minister Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue told The Associated Press that the figure is based on a body count in the capital and outlying areas by CNE, a state company that has been collecting corpses and burying them in a mass grave north of Port-au-Prince. It does not include other affected cities such as Jacmel, where thousands are believed dead, nor does it account for bodies burned by relatives.
Reports have varied on how many are known to have died, and the United Nations stuck with its previous total of 111,481 bodies recovered despite the higher number from Haitian officials. All told, authorities estimate 200,000 people were killed by the magnitude-7.0 quake, according to Haitian government figures cited by the European Commission.
"Nobody knows how many bodies are buried in the rubble — 200,000, 300,000?" Lassegue said Sunday. "Who knows the overall death toll?"
Experts say chances are slim that more survivors will be found in that debris, although rescuers tunneled through the wreckage of a fruit and vegetable shop on Saturday to extract a man trapped there for 11 days.
Wismond Exantus, 24, said he survived by diving under a desk during the quake and later consuming cola, beer and cookies in the cramped space. He passed the time praying, reciting psalms and sleeping while waiting for rescuers.
"I wasn't afraid because I knew they were searching and would come for me," he said Sunday while convalescing on a blue cot in a French field hospital tent. Doctors expected him to remain there for a few days.
AP - Haiti to Relocate 400,000 Quake Homeless
Haiti's government has declared an end to searches for living people trapped under debris, and officials are shifting their focus to caring for the thousands of survivors living in squalid, makeshift camps.
U.N. relief workers said the shift is critical: While deliveries of food, medicine and water have ticked up after initial logjams, the need continues to be overwhelming and doctors fear outbreaks of disease in the camps.
Doctors Without Borders reported that some its medical teams were beginning to see more patients with "infections or complications following basic or amateur attempts at treatment in the early days of the aftermath."
In the notorious slum of Cite Soleil, the site of some looting and violence since the quake, U.S. and Brazilian soldiers handed out food and water Sunday morning to thousands of men, women and children who lined up at a health center.
The U.S. soldiers brought 2,000 food rations, 75,000 high-energy biscuits and 9,000 bottles of water, while the Brazilians had 8 tons of food in small bags of uncooked beans, salt, sugar and sardines, as well as 15,000 liters of water.
Lunie Marcelin, 57, said her entire family — including six grown children who live with her — survived the quake, but they had no money to buy food.
The handouts "will help us, but it is not enough," she said. "We need more."
In the United States, organizers of the all-star "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon said Saturday that the event raised $57 million — and counting. The two-hour telethon aired Friday night and was also streamed live online. Stars such as Brad Pitt, Beyonce, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and more used their presence to encourage donations for Haiti.
As many as 200,000 people have fled Port-au-Prince, a city of 2 million, according to the U.S. Agency for International Development. About 609,000 people are homeless in the capital's metro area, and the United Nations estimates that up to 1 million could leave Haiti's destroyed cities for rural areas already struggling with extreme poverty.
The U.S. Geological Survey said Sunday it has recorded 52 aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 or greater since the Jan. 12 quake. | |

We just hold fast that this will not go on forever. One day these things will be so far behind us that we won't believe that it really happened, and that we made it through it all. Just hold close your faith and count your blessings each and every day. Pray hard for those in Haiti that we may be heard. | |

| I saw on the news today that Haiti was hit with a 6.1 after shock this morning. I do have friends over there and from the news myself and other friends have received, about 100 of them have died over there. You know this is truly a reality check. We have so much over here and other countries have less to nothing. I just feel so... I can't even describe what I feel. It's that deep. We really need to wake up and look at all of the blessings that our Almighty God Jehovah allows us each day. And that we live in a country that can help others in these other countries. I just wait patiently for the day when all of these critical times hard to deal with will be a definite and permanent time of the past. My prayer is that all over in Haiti that survives this devastation does not allow it to scare thier hearts but that it strenghthens them to deal with anything that may happen in the future. I also pray that no more earthquakes takes place over there allowing all to be able to regroup and think outside of the devastation and experience a feeling of love for all who are there. We do no why these major catastrophies are happening, and no we can't rejoice about these things happening, but we can show love and pray for everybody even those we have never met or know. As it was already mentioned there are human lives that are at stake and have been lost here. And life is a precious gift from God. May Jehovah embrace all of those in Haiti and all over the world. | |

| Yes, I believe I know enough about all our members to know that we are all praying over this. I have no doubts that we have all been affected by this. True, even if we can not go to Haiti, or even if you can not afford to donate, we can all get on our knees and pray. That is even more powerful than any other help, just like Candy said. | |

| As we all probably know by now there was a massive earthquake in Haiti. Thousands of deaths, a million people homeless, and half a million people hurt. This isn't even an accurate account. The numbers will be growing larger as the week goes on. Those poor people were already living in poverty and now this. I was feeling so helpless. Thank God I have myrazzles to come to. I just said a prayer and I know you are praying with me. If we can't do anything more than pray together, that is a mighty force and Haiti will never be the same again but, it can start healing. Thank you, my friends! Candy | |

| My dear friends today as you sit in your warm homes, playing a game, having a warm lunch or even a cold glass of water..Take a moment to give thanks that we have these things. This earthquake in Haiti has hit me very hard. I know why it happened and that it's the plan to get to the finish line. But I can not rejoice in this tragedy, just as we can not rejoice in death even if we believe our loved ones to be better off.
My husband and I talked today but there is no way we can get up the money to go to Haiti. Not even one of us. I would have to go through getting a passport and all that as well. Which I would in a second, but the money is not there. If my Jehovah wants me there to help then he will provide. I did make a donation, however. I was chipper in my earlier post about Thursday...my tv was off and I was on another level mentally. My tv is back on and it brings me sadness. It could be us! Anyone of us, at any time. Fires, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes.....it can happen to us all. Today remember that and give thanks for our blessings and mercy we receive. Pray for comfort, peace, health and strength for our people. They may live in another country but they are still our people. We are all of the same people. I watched a man carry his dead daughter. I watched a woman who has gone crazy because her 3 children were killed in the quake and her 4th died in the hospital..it's to much. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not intelligent about Haiti. I just learned they are a very poor country, without even clean water. I don't pretend to know about the country. I only know about human life. | |

Beware people are using this as an opportunity to scam money out of others. If you donate anywhere else, check and double check. As sad as it is, It is happening.

| I agree! I don't believe in divorce whatsoever (except under certain conditions) but if you are going to carry on affair after affair then you should just leave that person instead of wreaking havoc like this. I suppose hurt is inevitable either way, but I would think that would hurt alot less than having it done behind your back.
In this world that we constantly see a decline in morals and values, I am surprised that these companies find themselves losing money because of this. I am happy about it though. It shows that the US has not completely lost is morale.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean I'm happy they are losing money. (It's early.) lol I meant I'm glad we are not completely desensitized to not be affected by this. | |

| Woods scandal cost shareholders up to $12 billion* Study finds golfer’s affairs hurt sponsors’ market value * Findings show celebrity endorsements have downside risks MIAMI, Dec 29 (Reuters) - The sex scandal that engulfed Tiger Woods may have cost shareholders of companies endorsed by the world’s No. 1 golfer up to $12 billion in losses, according to a study by two economics professors from the University of California, Davis. The study, released on Monday by researchers Victor Stango and Christopher Knittel, gave an estimate for damage to the market value of Woods’ main sponsors caused by revelations of alleged extramarital affairs that surfaced after he was involved in a minor car accident outside his Florida home on Nov. 27. “We estimate that shareholders of Tiger Woods’ sponsors lost $5-12 billion after his car accident, relative to shareholders of firms that Mr. Woods does not endorse,” the researchers wrote, adding that millions of shareholders were affected. “Our analysis makes clear that while having a celebrity of Tiger Woods’ stature as an endorser has undeniable upside, the downside risk is substantial, too,” Stango, a professor at the UC Davis Graduate School of Management, said in a statement released along with the study. Woods, believed to be the world’s wealthiest athlete who was estimated to earn about $100 million a year in endorsement deals before his troubles, confessed on Dec. 11 to “infidelity” to his Swedish wife Elin Nordegren. He announced he would take an indefinite break from golf to save his marriage. Some of the star golfer’s main commercial sponsors have backed away from him as a result of the scandal. Others, while standing by him, have said they are evaluating their future relationship. STOCK MARKET RETURNS In their study, the two professors said they looked at stock market returns for the 13 trading days after Nov. 27, the date of the car incident that ignited the Woods scandal. They compared returns for Woods’ sponsors during this period to those of both the total stock market and of each sponsor’s closest competitor. They also reviewed returns for four years before the car accident to build up a comparative picture of the sponsors’ market performance. The study looked at sponsors of Tiger Woods for which stock prices were available, in several cases through quoted prices for the parent companies. Sponsors included: Accenture; AT&T; Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf (Electronic Arts); Gillette (Proctor and Gamble); Nike; Gatorade (PepsiCo); TLC Laser Eye Centers. The report carried a caution that this kind of statistical study might have a “particularly large” margin of error because many sponsors were subsidiaries of larger quoted companies. Overall, Knittel and Stango concluded that the scandal reduced shareholder value in the sponsor companies by 2.3 percent, or about $12 billion. They called the results statistically significant and said the overall pattern of losses at the parent companies was unlikely to stem from ordinary day-to-day variation in their stock prices.” “Our findings speak to a larger question of general interest in the business and academic communities: Does celebrity sponsorship have any impact on a firm’s bottom line?” Stango and Knittel said in presenting the report. The scandal saw a parade of more than a dozen women—from cocktail waitresses to porn stars—come forward to say they had affairs with the married father of two. Since the start of the scandal, Woods has kept out of sight of the media. Nothing and I mean nothing is worth putting your marriage at risk. I don't want to sound offensive to anyone but if you want to play outside of your marriage then maybe you should think about leaving that person and not hurting them with stuff like this. Not only has this possibly cost Tiger Woods his marriage and family, but look at all of the other innocent people who are affected. All Im saying is what a shame and waste. | |

| Tyra Banks Ending Talk Show; Will Focus On Film Production CompanyMon Dec 28, 7:45 AM PST Tyra Banks is ending her daytime TV talk show. The supermodel-turned-TV-mogul tyra-banks-says-"goodbye-to-talk-show" she will wrap up her talk show at the end of its current season - its fifth -- this coming spring. "This will be the last season of 'The Tyra Show,'" Tyra told the mag. "I've been loving having fun, coming into your living rooms, bedrooms [and] hair salons for the past five years." Instead of sitting down to talk to guests on a daily basis, Tyra will shift her focus to Bankable Studios, a film production company based in New York. The mag reported that the company is taking a look at potential projects to produce. "My next huge steps will allow me to reach more women and young girls to help us all feel as fierce as we truly are," Tyra said. Like her television show, Bankable will seek to bring "positive images of women to the big screen," a source told the mag. And Tyra hopes to have Bankable work on "redefining beauty for women in film," the source added. "With Oprah's big announcement this year, I think that gave Tyra the confidence to get out there and follow her longtime dream of film producing," the source said, referencing Oprah's news that she will leave "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in September 2011 to concentrate on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network. Tyra will stay committed, however, to her longtime reality competition, "America's Next Top Model," which recently crowned its first petite model winner, Nicole Fox. The show will return in 2010 with its 14th season. I think that Tyra is a good host. The Topics she chose to air on her show were interesting and useful and besides that she is so funny. Wonder if she will let Top Model go also. | |

I think this was a very noble and selfless thing to do. I used to admire Princess Diana so much because of the things like that she did. Looks as if her son has her compassion. | |

| Subject: Prince William Tue Dec 22, 2009 4:19 pm | |
| LONDON – A cold alley in central London is a far cry from a palace — but it was the spot Prince William chose to sleep to highlight the plight of homeless British teenagers. He spent a chilly night near Blackfriars Bridge last week with Seyi Obakin, the chief executive of British homeless charity Centrepoint. William has been the charity's patron since 2005. "I cannot, after one night, even begin to imagine what it must be like to sleep rough on London's streets night after night," William said Tuesday. "Poverty, mental illness, drug and alcohol dependancy and family breakdown cause people to become and then stay homeless. "I hope that by deepening my understanding of the issue, I can help do my bit to help the most vulnerable on our streets." William, second in line to the throne, was exposed to some of the hardships found on London's streets when his mother, Princess Diana, took him to a shelter in 1996. Just 13 at the time, William spent an hour at the facility with his younger brother, Harry. Diana was well-known for her charitable work and the homeless was a group she was particularly close to. She had also served as Centrepoint's patron, a position she held at the time of her death in 1997. A photograph released by the charity shows William, 27, in the alley in jeans, a gray hooded sweat shirt and a knit hat pulled low. In a post to the charity's Web site, Obakin said the idea for William to spend a night on the streets — known as "sleeping rough" in Britain — was hatched in March. "He was determined, as he has always been, to understand deeply the full range of problems a homeless young person might face," Obakin said. "For me, it was a scary experience. Out of my comfortable bed. Out there in the elements. Out there on an extremely cold night, with temperatures down to -4 C (39 F). And it was the same for Prince William. But he was determined to do it." Obakin said they found a secluded spot — tucked away behind some garbage bins — and settled in for a restless night. "But there was no shielding from the bitter cold, or the hard concrete floor, or the fear of being accosted by drug dealers, pimps or those out to give homeless people a 'good' kicking," Obakin said. William is currently training to be a Royal Air Force search-and-rescue pilot. | |
